As soon as I received the email congratulating me about being selected as the recipient of the 2012 Inspiring Women Gold Standards Scholarship, I immediately thought of my mother. I know first-hand how important money is while chasing a degree. My sophomore year I was not able to attend school for an entire semester due to finances so I know exactly what it’s like to struggle. The struggle is real! Last school year, my mother, who is a single parent, had to get a second job on top of her full-time job as a teacher just to pay for my tuition. As we all know, tuition has significantly increased and continues to do so every year so receiving this scholarship has been an amazing blessing because it will not only cover my tuition but also allows my mother to not have to work a second job if she doesn’t want to. However that experience makes me all the more appreciative to those who have selected me to receive this outstanding award.
This scholarship directly plays a huge role not only in my success as a student but also in my attitude as a person as I now have a desire to help someone else as much as everyone at TMCF has helped me. Being that I no longer have to worry about tuition I can now dedicate all of my energy to my studies so that when I graduate, I can better our community by becoming a psychologist specializing in African Americans with STDs. This scholarship will allow me to continue pursuing my dreams of becoming someone who makes a difference in someone else’s life. This scholarship given to me by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund truly makes the time I have invested in my education and community worth it.
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to those at Thurgood Marshall College Fund, especially those on the scholarship committee. The gift you have given me will put my goal of achieving a quality college education within reach.
