Title III Funding goes to our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and helps universities with administrative costs that otherwise would cause tuition to rise.  Please reach out to the U.S. Congress today and urge your Members in the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate to protect against funding cuts to Title III.  Strengthening HBCUs is a priority for President Obama and any proposals sent forward by the Super Committee known formally as the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction should reflect this national priority.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) asks that you review our recommendation to Congress and TAKE ACTION to ensure your voice is heard now! HBCUs’ alumni, faculty, students, presidents, donors and others must be engaged as the nation addresses challenges associated with the national debt, and skyrocketing unemployment rates in African-American communities. Title III is the most flexible and widely used discretionary account by all HBCUs and the current funding level is $237 million, which is nearly $30 million less than last year. Even more troubling is the recent announcement by U.S. Representative Denny Rehberg (MT-At-Large-R), Chair of the House Labor Health and Human Services-Education appropriations subcommittee, recommending additional cuts to Title III and to Minority Serving Institutions. If enacted, his proposal would result in a $151 million funding level for Title III B and the elimination of funding for Title III A, funding for Predominately Black Institutions (PBIs). Fortunately, the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee recommends level funding (maintaining current funding level) for Title III B under their Fiscal-Year 2012 budget.

Our young people deserve the kind of educational opportunities that have meant so much to us. Employers need the reliable and diverse pipeline to college-educated workers that HBCUs produce.
